Blackboard Status

From Blackboard Managed Hosting:

As you may already know, this weekend Blackboard Managed Hosting had an operational issue which may have impacted service availability of your Blackboard environment. The issue started on Sunday, 11/29 at 05:30 AM US Eastern and was resolved this morning (11/30) at 05:40 AM US Eastern causing intermittent outages. During this time our notification system was also impacted, emails were queued up and some notifications did not go out, so you may not have been alerted when your system service was restored. Blackboard would like to apologize for these issues and any inconvenience this may have caused. Please note that a formal report explaining these events in greater detail will be made available later this week.

"At this time we are observing intermittent connectivity issues within our datacenter. The problem has been diagnosed and in order to resolve, we are doing emergency maintenance. During the work, you might experience downtime as we restart services. We are taking all precaution to keep any client impact to a minimum."

Blackboard Maintenance

Blackboard E-mail Messages

E-mail messages sent from Blackboard are being flagged as junk mail by BearMail, which is managed by Microsoft. Microsoft has been made aware of the issue and is working toward a resolution to whitelist the e-mail messages sent from Blackboard. Until then, there are 3 options available to students:


1. Check your junk folders to check for false positives and clean them out on a regular basis.


2. Disable junk e-mail filtering by selecting Options->Junk E-Mail->Select radio button "Don't filter junk e-mail".


3. Create e-mail contacts and select Options->Junk E-Mail->select checkbox "Also trust e-mail from my Contacts" which is below the Safe Senders dialog box. Contacts can easily be created from e-mails received from other users by selecting the e-mail message, right-clicking on the sender's e-mail address and choosing “Add to Contacts...” The firstname and lastname need to be filled in, but those are the only mandatory fields.

Blackboard Services Restored - September 7th

Blackboard Hosted Support has advised that services have been restored to the University of Northern Colorado Blackboard Learning Management System. Additional details of the cause and resolution will be provided by the Hosted Support team once they are available.

Blackboard System Outage - September 7th

The University of Norther Colorado Blackboard support team was notified at approximately 7:32am on September 7th of a system outage causing intermittent availability of the Blackboard Learning Management System. We are working with Blackboard Hosted support to identify and restore the availability of Blackboard.

Blackboard System Outage - September 6th

The University of Norther Colorado Blackboard support team was notified at approximately 10:00pm on September 6th of a system outage causing intermittent availability of the Blackboard Learning Management System. All services were restored by the hosted support team by 11:20pm on September 6th.

Blackboard Maintenance

We apologize for the inconvenience but the Learning Management System (Blackboard) will be unavailable for SCHEDULED maintenance on Saturday, August 1st from 4AM MDT to 8PM MDT. On Monday, July 13th, 2009, Blackboard Managed Hosting experienced a data center-wide outage as a result of a failing network switch. Through a coordinated effort with their vendor, they determined that a full switch replacement is the best course of action to increase reliability and stability at their Northern Virginia Data Center 2 (VA2). As this device is a part of their core network infrastructure, they require an extended emergency maintenance window to perform the hardware replacement.

Respondus Lockdown Browser Update

As of August 1st 2009 the Respondus LockDown Browser will no longer be available to UNC faculty and students. The Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning has determined the product was comparatively underutilized. The application will be uninstalled from all UNC computer labs prior to fall semester 2009. CETL will continue to offer training sessions for faculty regarding issues of plagiarism and the available tools to combat it. For additional information please contact CETL at 970-351-2885.

Blackboard System Latency 7/13/09

Our Blackboard Managed Hosting service provider has reported the following status update regarding the UNC Blackboard environment:

“Service Interruption Possible_Network Latency: We have been notified by one of our ISPs that they are currently experiencing problems within their network. This may result in increased latency and/or packet loss when trying to access your hosted Blackboard system. A benefit of being a Blackboard Managed Hosting client is that we maintain multiple redundant connections to the Internet and this should help the situation. It is possible that traffic will be directed to our second provider during this time.”

Blackboard Maintenance

 Faculty and Staff,

UNC must renew the Blackboard contract no later than June 30, 2009. Conversations, currently taking place with Blackboard, indicate a substantial fee increase. The increase is primarily due to the upsurge of disk space. While the additional disk space may be due to richer content (video files, etc.) and a higher adoption rate of Blackboard, it is also believed that there are many Blackboard courses on the system that are no longer needed or in use. 

Instructors can help limit the increased fees, imposed by Blackboard, by archiving (electronically saving your course to another university maintained system such as Beardrive or storage media (DVD or CD, etc.)). For your convenience, IT has created instructions on how to archive a course, please visit SupportU. Remember, archived courses can easily be retrieved should you need access to this material in the future. We thank you for your cooperation.

Blackboard Maintenance

Blackboard users are currently experiencing problems with access to the system and slowness or no response once Blackboard is accessed. Blackboard is working to resolve the problem and will restore full service soon.

Thu, Sep 25, 2008 -- SafeAssign 

The SafeAssign tool will not be available for use on Saturday, September 27 from 4am to 4pm (MDT). Blackboard will be performing maintenance to update the tool so that Microsoft 2007 (.docx) and OpenOffice (.odt) documents can be submitted to SafeAssign.  

If you attempt to use the SafeAssign tool during this period you will receive an error message. This maintenance for all Blackboard customers.
