Blackboard Student Hints and Tips #2

Greetings,

To help you proactively prepare for the start of the fall semester, we have been communicating with you by providing support and tips about our Learning Management System - Blackboard. The next in this series addresses the use of non-supported internet browsers. Recently, Microsoft has introduced Internet Explorer version 8 as a part of its Windows updates. This version of browser has resulted in the report of varying issues within Blackboard, the most significant of which have impacted Tests and Surveys. The recommendation at this time if Internet Explorer version 8 is being used is to operate the browser in compatibility mode (see instructions via the following link: Setting IE 8 compatibility mode) or to utilize one of the recommended and support browsers. Blackboard Hosted Services provides UNC with this specific list and at this time Blackboard is currently only supported in Internet Explorer versions 6 & 7, Netscape versions 7 & 8, Firefox 1.5 & 2.0, and Safari 2.0. We would like to welcome you to the start of UNC’s 2009-2010 Academic Year. The start of class is fast approaching and we wanted to provide you with some helpful tips and updates about your access to and the support of Blackboard. If you were not already aware, all online courses open and become visible by you as a student in the course on the first day of classes, August 24th, 2009. You will not be able to access any content prior to that date unless the instructor has setup the course to open prior to that date. If the instructor has requested that course materials be accessed prior to that date, please contact the instructor for additional detail regarding the scheduled start date. UNC Students: Just a friendly reminder, all online courses open the first day of classes, August 24th. Students will not be able to access any content before that date. If the instructor of the course has requested that materials be accessed before that date, please contact the instructor directly for more information.

Blackboard Maintenance

We apologize for the inconvenience but the Learning Management System (Blackboard) will be unavailable for SCHEDULED maintenance on Friday, August 14th from 1AM MDT to 5AM MDT. As part of their Back to School initiative, the Blackboard Managed Hosting team will be performing schedule maintenance on their back-end infrastructure. This maintenance window will last from 1AM to 5AM MDT, as a precaution, this maintenance is not expected to affect end users during this period. They will take every precaution to keep the work seamless and maintain system availability. During this window service interruptions may occur for all systems. Blackboard Maintenance
