Blackboard Managed Hosting has provided updated information regarding SafeAssign paper processing:

"SafeAssign is experiencing regular delays due to high load on the system. Given projections from historical usage, the significant delays of 12-24 hours or more will continue through the first week of December and then rapidly ease off in mid-December as the semester closes. Clients should expect that they will not see any significant improvement in turnaround times before mid-December.

As a reminder to instructors, please do not resubmit papers. This takes the submission and moves it to the back of the queue. Right now, the back log is over 120,000 papers."

Blackboard 9.1 Upgrade December 10th

On Saturday December 10th, UNC's current Blackboard version 9.0 will be upgraded by Blackboard to version 9.1. Final grades cannot be entered by faculty or accessed by students in Blackboard during the upgrade process, but will be available prior to December 10th or after the upgrade has completed, approximately 5PM MST on December 10th. All courses created prior to the scheduled upgrade in the current Blackboard version will be upgraded to the 9.1 version.

Faculty teaching courses during the interim session can reference http://www.unco.edu/blackboard/ for additional support and details regarding the new version. Resources include narrated PowerPoint presentations and video information sessions that provide an introduction to Blackboard 9.1 and its features. There is also a schedule of "hands-on" orientation sessions in December and January that introduce the updated Blackboard interface to new and experienced users and provide practice performing the basic functions necessary to modify and facilitate a Blackboard course in the new version. On Monday, February 8th, some users of the SafeAssign service begin receiving "Access Denied" messages when submitting a SafeAssign assignment. The issue was quickly identified as an expired SSL certificate within the SafeAssign installation. The Managed Hosting Operations team reports that the issues with SafeAssign have now been resolved. The SSL certificate was successfully updated and users should no longer receive "Access Denied" messages.

From Blackboard Managed Hosting: "On Tuesday, November 2nd, papers submitted to SafeAssign were not being processed. The outage was caused by a storage failure related to continued high submission volume. It took some time to identify the cause, but thereafter service was quickly resolved. As part of the resolution, we have added storage capacity to be more reliable and robust. We believe the system is stabilized and papers are now being processed. There remains a backlog of papers that are queued for processing; this will occur over the next few days and we expect the system to be completely caught up by November 9th.

Blackboard E-mail Messages

E-mail messages sent from Blackboard are being flagged as junk mail by BearMail, which is managed by Microsoft. Blackboard Managed Hosting has been made aware of the issue and is working toward a resolution to white-list the e-mail messages sent from Blackboard, through Outlook Live (BearMail). Until then, there are 3 options available to students:

1. Check your junk folders to check for false positives and clean them out on a regular basis.

2. Disable junk e-mail filtering by selecting Options->Junk E-Mail->Select radio button "Don't filter junk e-mail".

3. Create e-mail contacts and select Options->Junk E-Mail->select checkbox "Also trust e-mail from my Contacts" which is below the Safe Senders dialog box. Contacts can easily be created from e-mails received from other users by selecting the e-mail message, right-clicking on the sender's e-mail address and choosing “Add to Contacts...” The first name and last name need to be filled in, but those are the only mandatory fields.
